Three years and countless hours in the making, the TMOT spans 373 miles from the Western border to the Northern edge of the state with an expansion connector running to the eastern tip for another 237 miles. This route travels through the remote wilderness of Maine where you can get away from it all and truly enjoy this remote region without the worry of which turn to take next. The TMOT file includes many points of interest along the way including campsites, gas stations, food, scenic highlights, and more! This trail is to be traveled at your own pace and your own risk. West to north can usually be done in 3 days and west to east in 4 days but we would recommend extra time if you wish to explore the countless other side trails along the way.
Deep in the forests of Maine you will find abundant wildlife and great scenery around every turn. Depending on the time of year, it is not uncommon to see one of our famous Maine moose along the journey too!
TMOT is designed to be enjoyed by any stock 4x4. There are some occasional fun challenges along the way but nothing anyone couldn't handle. Minor pin striping is a possibility in some spots. Our only strong recommendation is good tires with a matching full size spare.
There are many great campsites marked along the way for your enjoyment that will offer peace and quiet at night away from the noise of the cities. Most of these places are free to use, some do not require fire permits unless noted, and others you will find within the area called the North Maine Woods. This section of remote forest has checkpoints to get in and out and will cost a fee per person for entry and camping. More information can be found at http://northmainewoods.org
TMOT will take you in and out of many active working forests throughout the state. It is important to remember that this is their private land and use is a privilege, not a right. Use caution around corners and over blind hills as logging trucks frequent these areas and always have the right of way. Pull over, let them pass, and let the dust settle before continuing on.
207 Overland Platinum Members get access to the TMOT as part of their GPS Route Folder at no additional charge. No need to request access, it is already live in your ONX share folder right now!
TOMT is available as a stand alone download and lifetime updates will be provided to the email address used to request the file. The file is a .gpx and easily imported into Gaia, OnX, or other mapping software.
