The epic west adventure

July 18- August 15

A heavy hitting west coast  trip of epic proportions, we have hand picked 7 of the very best trips around and combined them into one amazing expedition with new surprises around each corner. The best of the best scenery, overland style adventure, and technical trails will keep you on your toes until the very end starting in Montana and ending in southern Alaska.

The Epic West Adventure Itinerary:

Glacier National Park

Our first  stop after traveling west across the country is to take one of the most scenic drives in the lower US through Glacier National Park via the famous Going to the Sun Road. Breathtaking mountain vistas and glacial lakes await you on this amazing trip opener.

The Whipsaw Trail

British Columbia sure has its share of world class trails and the Whipsaw is no exception. After a challenge on the trails, the reward at the end of each day here is camping deep in the forest and mountains of western Canada.

Vancouver Island

If this spot has never been on your radar, it should be! Oceanside escapes, towering redwood forests, trails, lakes, and an atmosphere like no where else make this a must stop destination during our journey.

Harrison Lake Trail

While not overly technical, this area offers some of the most peaceful remote exploring and camping around and cant be missed as we start to head north.

Caribou Chilcotin Trail

Another exciting technical section of trail, this famous BC trail features fun options for every rig and experience level. Take the leisurely way around or choose one of the harder options. This place has it all.

The Telkwa Pass

This mountain pass is one of the most beautiful around and the trails and camping around sheer cliff faces will leave you speechless. Some of the most epic looking overland films around were filmed here for good reason.

Hyder Alaska

The small town of Hyder in southern Alaska is our gateway for one final leg to the journey. From here we will follow old mining roads deep into the mountains, surrounded by active glaciers, old mines, and towering vistas. It may be our last stop but some would say we've saved the best for last.

About the trip

This absolutely massive 4 week adventure meets in North New Jersey and covers just shy of 9200 miles across the western US, British Columbia, into Southern Alaska and back again. There will be plenty of stops along the way including a day dedicated to mid trip vehicle maintenance and laundry. We will be dispersed camping for the majority of the journey but will also include several stops at real camping facilities to take advantage of their showers.

As with all of our trips, you and your vehicle for this trip must meet all the requirements including being able to cross international borders and travel long distances without issue. There will be plenty of opportunities for supplies along the way but you and any of your participants should be prepared for life on the road for the duration of the expedition.

The Epic West Adventure Itinerary:

One epic adventure, broken down into 4 amazing pieces. Part one is our journey to and through Glacier National Park and conquering the Whipsaw Trail in British Columbia. Next we will travel to Vancouver Island for part two. Part 3 will see us through the Harrison Lake and Chilcotin Trails, and finally part 4 starts with an epic journey through Telkwa Pass and concludes in the Hyder Alaska area. A full daily trip itinerary will go out to participants as the trip gets closer.

The Epic West Adventure is designed to be experienced with a small group of likeminded individuals to keep the adventure going smoothly. This trip will be limited to 5 vehicles and participant families.

DestinationXtreme will have this trip fully planned for you from beginning to end and make sure you are completely prepared beforehand. Extra expenses for this trip include but are not limited to:

  • Fuel to cover 9.2k miles
  • Food - groceries and restaurants
  • Ferry Fees - Our crossing to and from Vancouver Island via car ferry
  • Vehicle Maintenance - mid trip oil change and inspection

FAQs

Is this a family/pet friendly trip?

The short answer is yes, but there are some things to consider. This is a long duration overland style trip across the country. Your kids should be old enough to understand, have experience with, and be comfortable with long days in the vehicle and camping. Every family is different but typically we find kids over the age of 6 do best with trips of this type. Keep in mind, your child will need a passport as well. As for pets, your well behaved and leash trained dog is always welcome. However, keep in mind you must be able to show proof of vaccinations at international crossings and your dog will also need to be used to long days in the vehicle.

Are bears and other wildlife a concern?

We will be traveling deep into the wilderness and will experience all manner of wildlife while here. While camping at night, precautions should be taken to avoid leaving any food or scent that could attract bears. We will go over this with participants well in advance but this includes not leaving food or garbage out/unsealed and even extra care with soaps and deodorants.

What about the bugs?

Warm weather means mosquito season in the woods of British Columbia so be prepared. We will go over this as the trip gets close but extra bug gear like spray, repellant, nets, and appropriate skin covering clothing is required.

Will be break up the days of driving?

Yes, although there is a large distance to cover, each day we will take breaks and there will be opportunities to be on your feet and some chances to explore too.

Where will we shower and go to the bathroom along the way?

Our camping with be mostly dispersed, carry in, carry out style and you will need to bring your own bathroom facility. However, we will plan a few stops at real campgrounds throughout the trip to enjoy hot showers and real restrooms.

What are the gas prices like?

While in the states, expect gas prices to be very similar to what you are used to at home. Once we cross over onto the island and into the remote areas of British Columbia, expect the gas prices to climb to anywhere from $5usd per gallon to as much as $8usd in some extreme places.

Do I need to bring cash?

No, you can get Canadian money out of an ATM using your bank card once you have crossed over. Most places we will go accept cards but some cash is recommended as a backup the further north we get. We will stop at a Canadian ATM before getting too far into the trip.  Most importantly, please contact your bank, credit card, and cell phone provider well before the trip and inform them of your travel plans to avoid issues once crossing over.

Is a passport required?

Yes, it is and it is a prerequisite for signing up.  A full passport is strongly recommended in case of emergency.
